| today i was fitted for a tuberculosis mask. part of the process is having this awful tasting substance sprayed around your mask while you move your head around, talk, etc.
i found out that i have horrible taste. literally.
at the end of the test, you're supposed to deliberately break the seal on your mask. typically most people have an immediate and noticeable reaction to the horrible taste of the spray. i barely noticed it. the guy refilled the dispensor and was noticeably more vigorous in his efforts to gag me when he repeated the test.
what's funny is that last week my roommate called me out in front of a bunch of people. i think i was talking about how panda tastes good even though it's one of only 4 major food groups in my diet (other than subway, carmelina's burritos, and whatever the bearded lady with the hairnet is serving in the hospital cafeteria). while i was talking about the orange chicken, he cut me off curtly saying that i have horrible taste.
well now i guess it's confirmed objectively. i guess this is a good thing? (esp. since i apparently don't know what i'm missing out on all the finer foods in life)
such a telling metaphor as i sit in an empty computer lab staring at my boards stuff pondering what my life is comprised of and what it's going to be like as a doctor. maybe it's better not being able to taste good things to have them soured or taken away.
and even if they are, it still makes for a powerful reminder of dying more to self, relying more on the sufficiency of Christ alone in life, and developing maturity in finding contentment that is irrespective of external circumstances. . or it could just be that i've been given a higher threshold for that which is distasteful. |

-abortion is the 2nd most common surgery performed on women of reproductive age (after cesarean deliver)
-in 2005 (the lowest since 1976--shortly after abortion's legalization), there were 1.2 million abortions. just to put that in perspective, in the same year there were 2.5 million deaths in US from all causes. heart disease which was the greatest contributer was in the 600K.
-1/3 of all the world's pregnancies end in abortion. |
